Three of Dalmatia's most rewarding sights sit within half an hour of Split, and almost nobody visits them properly. Klis Fortress, the Roman ruins of Salona, and the UNESCO-listed old town of Trogir can all be seen comfortably in a single day — if you have your own driver and skip the coach queues.
This guide covers what you will actually see, how long to allow, and how a private day tour from Split works.
Why these three together
They tell the story of Dalmatia in order. Salona was the Roman capital of the province and the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian's world. Klis is the mountain fortress that guarded the pass behind it for two thousand years. Trogir is the medieval town that survived intact. Visiting them in one day gives you Roman, medieval and Venetian Dalmatia in a few hours, with a fixed price confirmed before you pay and no bus timetables.
Klis Fortress
Klis sits astride a rocky pass above Split, and the view alone justifies the trip — the whole city, the islands and the Adriatic spread out below you. The fortress changed hands between Romans, Croatian kings, Ottomans and Venetians, and the layered walls show it.
Allow 60–90 minutes to walk the ramparts. It is roughly 25 km from Split Airport and about 15 minutes from the city centre. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise it as the city of Meereen.
Wear proper shoes — the stone is uneven and can be slippery.

Salona (Solin)
A short drive downhill lies Salona, once a city of tens of thousands and the largest Roman settlement on the eastern Adriatic. Today it is a quiet archaeological park: the amphitheatre, basilicas, city walls and necropolis spread across olive groves and fields.
Allow 45–60 minutes. It is far less crowded than Diocletian's Palace and, for many visitors, more atmospheric precisely because you can wander it almost alone.
Trogir
Finish in Trogir, a small island town of marble streets, Venetian palaces and the remarkable Cathedral of St Lawrence with Radovan's carved portal. The whole historic centre is UNESCO-listed and compact enough to explore on foot in a couple of hours.
Trogir sits just 5–6 km from Split Airport, which makes this tour a natural option on an arrival or departure day. Allow 1.5–2 hours, plus lunch on the waterfront if you have time.
How long the day takes
A comfortable version of this tour runs 6–7 hours door to door:
- Pickup from your accommodation in Split
- Klis Fortress — 60–90 min
- Salona — 45–60 min
- Trogir — 1.5–2 hours, optional lunch
- Return to Split (or drop-off at the airport)
Because the vehicle is private, you set the pace. Want longer in Trogir and a quick stop at Klis? Just say so on the day.
What it costs
Private excursions are priced per vehicle, not per person, with the total confirmed before you pay. For a short regional route like this, sedans start from around €52 for the Split–Trogir leg alone, and full-day tours are quoted based on hours and vehicle size. Minibus and private bus are quoted on request.

- A driver who knows the roads, including the narrow approach to Klis.
- Door-to-door, including hotels, villas and the airport.
- Fixed price, no hidden extras.
If you would rather build your own itinerary across several days, the chauffeur service puts a driver and vehicle at your disposal.
