Half an hour inland from Split the landscape changes completely: stone walls, olive groves, oak woods and quiet tracks with views back to the sea. It is ideal riding country, and a horse riding trip makes a refreshing change from beaches and old towns.
This guide covers what to expect, who it suits, and how to get there without a rental car.
What the experience is like
Rides typically run through the countryside behind Split — gentle trails rather than arena work, with a guide leading the group. Horses are matched to experience, so complete beginners get calm, patient animals and a slow pace, while confident riders can ask for something livelier.
Most sessions last 1–2 hours, with a short briefing and basic instruction before you mount. Longer rides and sunset options are usually available on request.
Who it suits
- Complete beginners — no experience needed; the guide stays with you.
- Families — older children generally ride well; ask about minimum ages when booking.
- Couples — a sunset ride is a genuinely memorable evening.
- Experienced riders — say so in advance and you will be matched accordingly.
If anyone in your group would rather not ride, they can usually come along and wait at the stables.

What to wear and bring
- Long trousers — jeans or leggings; shorts will rub.
- Closed shoes with a small heel if you have them; trainers are acceptable.
- A hat and sun cream, plus water in summer.
- Helmets are normally provided — confirm when booking.
Avoid the hottest part of the day in July and August. Morning and late afternoon are far more comfortable for both riders and horses.
Getting there
The stables are inland, poorly served by public transport, and awkward to find without local knowledge. A private transfer takes you door to door from your accommodation in Split, waits or returns at an agreed time, and removes any need to drive on unfamiliar country roads.
As with all our journeys, the price is fixed and confirmed before you pay, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and the driver is licensed and English-speaking. Groups of 1 to 49 can be accommodated.

Combining it with other stops
Because the ride sits inland, it pairs naturally with other trips in the same direction:
- Klis Fortress — dramatic views, 15 minutes from Split. See the Klis, Salona & Trogir tour.
- Cetina River rafting near Omiš — a full adventure day. See rafting from Split.
- ZipLine Omiš — for anyone who wants more adrenaline. See ZipLine Omiš.
For a full day with several stops, the chauffeur service gives you a driver and vehicle for as long as you need.
When to go
Spring (April–June) is arguably the best time: the countryside is green, wildflowers are out, and temperatures are comfortable for a longer ride. Autumn (September–October) is similar, with warm days and softer light for photographs.
In July and August the middle of the day is too hot for riding, so stick to early morning or the hour before sunset. Winter rides are possible on clear days and the landscape is quiet and atmospheric, though sessions may be shorter.
Whatever the season, book a day or two ahead — stables are small operations and popular slots fill quickly.
What makes it worth doing
Most visitors to Split never leave the coast. An hour inland the pace drops completely: dry-stone walls, olive terraces, sheep tracks and the smell of pine and sage. From higher points you can see the sea and the islands behind you, which is when most people reach for their phone.
It is also one of the few activities here that works equally well for a couple, a family with teenagers, or a group of friends looking for something other than a boat trip.
